January 2026 – Excerpt from CanRepair’s December 2025 Newsletter:
“Back Again! Right to Repair Makes a Return in Ontario – This Time Even Stronger
Right to Repair is back on the order paper of the legislature of Canada’s largest province!
Earlier this month, MPPs Tom Rakocevic, Terence Kernaghan, and John Vanthof introduced Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025. CanRepair applauds this effort and is calling on all MPPs to support the legislation. The bill would cover automotive, agricultural, consumer electronics and appliance repair, which are some of the highest priority categories of the right to repair movement!
The bill builds on legislation that had been introduced in 2024, but features even stronger consumer protections. In particular, it…
Provides consumers and repair shops with access, at no or a fair cost, to the tools, manuals, parts and embedded software needed to conduct repair and diagnostic work
Bans parts pairing and requires that the means to bypass digital locks be provided, when needed for repair
Prohibits the voiding warranties solely because of repair by a consumer or independent repair business or because parts not authorized by the supplier were used in the repair
Gives government the power to levy fines when violations occur and ensures that compensation, or the repair, is provided to the consumer
The proposed legislation is based heavily off of CanRepair’s model bill, which we are encouraging all provinces to use as a template for right to repair legislation in their jurisdiction. You can find our model bill here.“
